“easyAIS” is a free application designed for real-time vessel positioning, specifically tailored for use with AIS receivers that have WiFi connectivity. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a maritime transponder and receiver system established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with the primary goals of enhancing maritime safety and protecting the marine environment.

The practical applications of AIS are numerous:

  • Facilitating collision avoidance through ship-to-ship communication.
  • Allowing ports and coastal authorities to identify vessels and manage traffic in their waters, contributing to the efficiency of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).
  • Aiding in the identification of ships that are not visibly apparent, such as during nighttime, in radar blind spots, or at a distance.

AIS operates by exchanging navigation data via specialized VHF transceivers, adhering to a global standard that allows vessels equipped with AIS from different manufacturers to interact seamlessly. The system provides visibility beyond visual obstacles and serves as a complementary tool to radar systems. Depending on antenna installation height, an AIS station typically has a transmission range of approximately 20 to 30 nautical miles.

The “easyAIS” app, developed by Weatherdock AG, visually represents all AIS targets within range relative to the user's position. Upon launching the app, users encounter a virtual radar screen displaying these AIS targets. Interacting with any target by tapping on it reveals a detailed list containing essential information such as GPS position, course over ground, speed over ground, vessel name, call sign, dimensions, draft, and port of registration.

“easyAIS” derives its AIS data via WiFi from an onboard AIS receiver or transceiver. However, it is important to note that “easyAIS” is not intended for navigational purposes.
